Landscape photography is, or should be, about a lot more than gathering pretty pictures of the natural world. It is an interpretation of that world, and at its best an intensely personal interpretation. But how do you get there? How can a photographer go deeper into landscape? This is the challenge we’ll explore in this workshop. There is no simple formula but there is a path that can lead any photographer deeper into landscape—a path with two equally important parts: One part is mastering the craft (these days that means the full spectrum of digital photo techniques) and in the process honing and refining your own graphic and photo-graphic style. The other part is developing a deep connection with your subject matter, whether a specific landscape, a certain physical place, or a more general landscape theme—but something that moves you deeply. Something you simply have to photograph. This is the crux. In this workshop we’ll follow both paths, photographing intriguing locations in great northern New Mexico light, but even more importantly, critiquing and discussing your photographic journey. (I want to encourage participants to bring not just a random assortment of their best images, but a also group of photos that attempt to capture the essence of a place). The goal of this workshop is quite ambitious, but I think quite realistic, to push your landscape photography to another level, more personal, more fully realized and more satisfying, for the photographer, and for those who view your images. Our goal is to share our deepest feelings about the natural world, with images that can produce equally strong emotions... To set the stage, and to get a sense of how I try to go deeper into landscape, I’d encourage anyone interested in this workshop to download a few of my free eBooks (available in the BOOKS section of this web site. I think they illustrate what I mean by getting involved, deeply involved with your subject. The Mexican poet, Octavio Paz, wrote: "A landscape is not just the description of what our eyes see but rather the revelation of what lies behind visual appearances. A landscape never refers only to itself, but to something else, something beyond—a metaphysics, a religion, a conception of humanity and the cosmos." He was right. Your landscape photography tells who you are and what you really care about. Santa Fe and the Santa Fe Workshop campus is the perfect home base for our workshop. You can visit the Santa Fe Photo Workshps web site and register for this workshop by clicking > HERE < And if you have any questions about this workshop please don't hesitate to email me, or phone me at my new phone number, 719 937 7761 (although I will be travling and photographing in Iceland, and thus out of pocket for phone calls, from August 6 through August 24). |
