Just north of Patagonia, in Chile's 9th region, is an area of beautiful active volcanos and mysterious prehistoric-looking trees, These trees, Araucarias (also known in English as "Monkey Puzzle trees," are an ancient species. They have been around, botanists say, for 200 million years. Giant Araucarias grow more than 150 ft high; and the oldest living Araucarias are over 2,000 years old. In late autumn of 2006 (early May in the southern hemisphere) I was lucky enough to spend a week with friends in the heart of this zone in Chile's Conguillío National Park. I found these ancient auaucaria forests, beneath the gently smoking bulk of Volcan Llaima, to be as visually exciting as they are botanically unique.
